Public Health Dentistry


About us

The Department of Public Health Dentistry (formerly known as Preventive and Community Dentistry) is an expert field in dentistry which deals with the promotion of oral health through the art of prevention. The field has been expanding with more emphasis being placed on total dental care delivery system and its impact on oral health status. The department has been actively involved in providing comprehensive oral health care i.e. preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative care along with health education and motivation for the society.

The department has been offering comprehensive oral care at the institution and in rural areas through fully functional satellite centres, adopted dental clinics at the Tibetan settlement, school dental clinics and special schools. The department also has state of the art mobile dental unit specially designed to provide oral health care at remote and inaccessible areas thereby exposing graduating interns to complex scenarios.

The department also renders dental care and referrals to specialist clinics as and when needed. Department regularly conducts health camps as part of its service to society throughout the far flung southern part of Karnataka and northern part of Kerala. The department has been actively involved in organizing mass awareness campaigns through radio talks, audio-visual health talks, health education exhibitions, street plays and health rallies on special occasions. The department also has an oral health education unit at the Department with visual and material aids to educate patients on oral health.

  • Society with zero oral health related problems and this can be achieved by providing best oral health care by bringing oral health services right to their doors.
  • Educate young professionals to facilitate – reinforcement of learning and acquisition of knowledge, achievement of basic dental skills, development of sound dental attitudes and habits, understanding of professional and ethical principles.
  • To become an accomplished centre of unique evidence based dental education system in the country.

Professor and Head
Dr. Jithesh Jain completed his BDS from AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore in 1992 and his MDS (Public Health Dentistry) in 1999 from SDM College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad. He is the member of Disciplinary committee of CIDS, Virajpet. He is a PG guide with several completed and ongoing research projects. He is also the Vice Principal (Academics) of the Institution.

Dr. Ananda S.R. completed BDS from Bapuji Dental College, Davangere, and MDS (Public Health Dentistry) from College of Dental Sciences, Davangere in 2009. He has completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Biostatistics and SAS programme from Cliniminds, Bangalore. He is also the NSS Program Officer of CIDS, Virajpet. He is a PG guide with several completed and ongoing research projects.

Dr. Bhakti Sadhu has completed her BDS in 2011 and MDS (Public Health Dentistry) in 2015 from A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore. She has also completed her PG Diploma in Bioethics and Medical Ethics (PGDBEME) from Centre of Bioethics, Yenepoya University, Mangalore. She has been a Trainee Surveyor in International Course on Surveying and Evaluating Ethical Review Practices, Yenepoya University Ethics Committee, Mangalore. She has also completed 6 months Certificate Course on Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Methodology from Manipal University. She has several completed and ongoing research projects.
