Words from Dr. Sunil Muddaiah | Dean

Coorg (Kodagu) is renowned for its distinctive flora, fauna, and rich Kodava culture, set amid the lush green dales of the Western Ghats. In this pristine, pollution-free environment, the Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences, established in 1999, has become well known for its quality education and patient care. India, a globally recognized mega-diverse nation, occupies only about 2.4% of the Earth’s land area yet supports roughly 7–8% of all recorded species. Coorg, the smallest district in Karnataka at about 4,102 sq km, lies within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO-recognized biodiversity hotspot and one of the world’s critical conservation regions.

The Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences has established a dedicated research laboratory named AAVISHKAAR (“Innovation”). AAVISHKAAR is designed to integrate ongoing research across multiple streams of medicine and dentistry on a common platform, with the goal of enabling truly holistic treatment outcomes.
AAVISHKAAR will serve both as a catalyst and a guide for future research at the institute and as a collaborative platform for like-minded researchers to pursue their work. Its core research areas include phytochemicals in medicine, oral potentially malignant disorders (PMDs), lasers, human microbiology, cleft lip and palate management, and dental material science.
The centre will also support researchers in securing funding for projects within these focus areas, whether through the institution’s internal research fund or from external funding agencies.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences is committed to maintaining the highest standards of research practice. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) ensures that all research, particularly studies involving human participants, is conducted safely and in full compliance with applicable national and international ethical guidelines.

The IRB guides institutional researchers to ensure that clinical trials are conducted and data are documented and reported in accordance with approved study protocols and Good Clinical Practice, as well as guidelines issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization. Institutional Standard Operating Procedures have been developed, and a working manual has been prepared to safeguard the interests of both research participants and researchers.

It is mandatory for all personnel at CIDS - including undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty investigators - to understand and adhere to these guidelines
